The Representative of the Frente Polisario (Western Sahara) to Australia Kamal Fadel participated in the celebrations commemorating Africa Day held in Canberra on 27 My 2014.

The Hon Julie Bishop MP, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Australia attended the event as the Guest of Honour. The event was also attended by members of the Diplomatic Corps accredited to Australia, Representatives of the Australian Government, Members of Parliament as well as members of the African community resident in Australia.

The Africa Day celebration was an opportunity for the Saharawi representative to meet the Heads of Missions of countries that recognise the Saharawi republic such as South Africa, Nigeria, Algeria,  Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Botswana, Cuba and Venezuela.

Africa Day is the annual commemoration of the 1963 founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), presently recognized as the Africa Union (AU). The African Union, comprised of 53 member states, has brought together the continent of Africa to collectively address the challenges it has faced, such as armed conflict, climate change, and poverty.

It is worth noting that the Saharawi Republic (SADR) is a full-fledged member of the African Union (AU). The SADR joined the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on 22 February 1982.
