Western Sahara activist ‘beaten’ after talking to BBC

A human rights campaigner from the disputed territory of Western Sahara says he was beaten by Moroccan police after giving an interview to the BBC.
Rachid Sghir and his colleagues were aware of the risks they ran by being interviewed for our TV documentary series Tropic of Cancer.

WOMADelaide festival: MARIAM HASSAN PERFORMS IN AUSTRALIA

dsc01346red.JPGThe four day WOMADelaide festival of international music took place between Friday 5 and Monday 8 March 2010 Adelaide (Australia) with the attendance of over 80.000 music and dance fans.
One of the highlights this year was the Saharawi artist and singer Mariam Hassan.
Mariam and her group performed every day during the festival. They sang Saharawi traditional and national songs and performed Saharawi dances.Saharawi supporters in Australia were always present to raise the Saharawi flag and support the group during all their acts.

The story of a World Champion long-distance runner from Africa’s last colony, the Western Sahara:
… As he approached the last 200m in the lead of an 8km race, he pulled out a Sahrawi flag – illegal in Morocco and a symbol of the “Sahrawi Intifada” – and waived it across the finish line. Knowing he would be arrested on arrival in Morocco, he immediately sought political asylum in France and has been there ever since.

IPL claims not responsible

WSRW – Reply to the Chairman’s statement in the AGM:
Australian phosphate importer Incitec Pivot said at its recent Annual General Meeting that the UN is responsible for the Western Sahara issue, not the company. Simultaneously, they defended their imports which are taking place in violation of the UN’s legal opinion and over 100 UN resolutions.
